Roadworks

PostWed Feb 04, 2015 4:14 pm

Thought it might be an idea to keep roadworks (I mean significant projects, not just pothole repairs) in this folder.

Two schemes have just started this week (neither of which were mentioned on Cardiff Council's weekly roadworks report!) the first is the addition of a bus lane along Llantrisant road in front of the BBC - a local councillor is up in arms about it saying the road is already at capacity etc.
I've lived in Llandaff for 4 years now, and previously worked at the BBC for 7 and I disagree that this will have any effect on traffic - the issue with Llantrisant road as far as I can see is the stop-start nature of the stretch of Cardiff Road running between the Heathcock pub and the traffic lights with Western Avenue, where you've got:
A horrible mini roundabout, an unnecessarily long yellow box junction, a right turn into Fairwater Road (with not enough room for a 'through' lane AND a 'right turn' lane) and then a bus stop and pelican crossing in quick succession.
Getting your car above 10mph at most times of the day is practically impossible!

A bus lane or additional lane outside the BBC will solve nothing, the only way of solving the traffic through Llandaff is by undertaking measures on Cardiff Road - such as preventing cars turning right into Fairwater Road and replacing the bus stop outside Barclays bank with a layby.

The other scheme is happening at Gabalfa interchange, but I have absolutely no idea what they are doing or how long for so if anybody could enlighten me...

They're supposed to be adding bus lanes to Caerphilly Road, largely by digging up the verges and narrowing the pavements.

There is no getting away from the fact that Llantrisant Road, Cardiff Road/Western Ave junction is a very busy stretch of road at rush hour, particularly on the stretch through Llandaff village. There are no easy solutions but I'm all for bus lanes, park and rides etc to make public transport more attractive.

Re Gabalfa, they are repairing the bridge due to damage caused by an rtc. Going to take 5 weeks.

"rtc" always amuses me.Some bright new thing in the police hierarchy decided there was no such thing as an 'accident' so we will call them 'collisions'. So, 'rtc' instead of 'rta'. Thing is, all legislation - including recent - refers to 'road accidents'.
Hmmmmm!?? We'll have to get some senior police officer into the legislature!

I think the same person(s) decided that - after so many years - we will not have a Police Traffic Division. We will call it 'Road Policing' instead of 'Traffic'. Marvellous how, every so often, someone tries to reinvent the wheel!!
