Fighting in town

Walking home from a party at a friend's house at about 1am I couldn't help but notice the amount of animosity in town. Safe to say it was drink induced but still. It's hardly surprising for things to be a little 'messy' in town on a weekend so I half expected that but the level of aggression in several 'incidents' was beyond what I expected. Is a new mood in the air?

I wonder the extent to which foreign tourists are put off by the binge drinking culture in UK cities? Being a hot destination for stag dos is considered a financial coup for the city but has a different clientele been alienated?

there has always been fighting in town. it is nowhere near as bad as it once was and I'd say town is pretty safe these days. there are plenty of decent pubs and bars that don't cater for the 'carrying invisible carpets under their arms' brigade

Cardiff city centre is a no-go zone on the weekend.

On Saturday, I went to renew my membership of the Eagle and walked through St Mary Street and the Hayes at about 10.30pm. I counted eleven hen parties. As I walked past Debenhams to Charles Street, a bride to be thought it would be funny to attack me with her giant inflatable penis.

On my way back, a herd of young men in Ben Sherman shirts approached me on Wharton Street. The leader went right up to me and shouted "You're a fucking legend, mate!". I gave no response and totally ignored him. He then shouted from behind, '"Fuck you then you fucking twat."

I have no objections to people having a good time and I have no doubt Cardiff's night time economy is buoyant, but it gives a very poor impression of the city and I detest how Cardiff's compactness means that everything and everyone is on top of each other. The nice restaurant has to be on the same street as the chavvy clubs etc.

You forgot Denmark! Was in Copenhagen a few year back and about 100 "football" supporter were at the main train station, basically running am-mock, throwing and smashing bottles. I expected the riot police to charge, but the police just stood looking very relaxed and waited for them to stop, then the cleaning staff arrived, as this was regularly Saturday afternoon event. (which I think it was, judging by rest of the commuters complete non reactions)

On Cardiff. There was a more serious isolated violence in the city years back, but now its much less violent but far more widespread low level stuff on Friday/Saturday nights. But as a society in the UK any confrontation these days is out of the norm. Personely I find the city centre on Fri/Sat very off putting, Hen/Stag/Beggar central.

Going out in Cardiff on a Saturday (and to a slightly lesser extend Friday) can be horrific.
Thanks fully now I have a 5 year old we're not likely to be out late enough to witness it.

I was just about to revive this thread to mention that I'd been pelted with an egg on my way home. The 'brave' assailant was in a car which quickly sped away down Cowbridge Road. Bizarrely yesterday as I was walking past the castle a lady in a car shouted abuse at me as she went past. All pretty harmless and hardly comparable to LA style drive-bys. But these things matter. We want to compete with Bristol, it doesn't help if this is the impression people get of Cardiff.

It isn't unique to Cardiff and isn't going to be the thing that stops us competing with Bristol, which is just as bad.

that's nothing Frank. I was down Barry Island the other day and I saw a man attack his wife with a bat. The police turned up and the man then proceeded to attack the policeman in a frenzied assault. Thankfully there was a doctor nearby who came over to the aid of the policeman to make sure he was ok but the man, who had totally lost it by now, started attacking the doc too. It all got a bit surreal when a crocodile appeared out of nowhere and the man proceeded to attack the croc with his bat.
