...and yet more student accommodation right opposite the National Museum.

What happened to the days of a grotty bedsit, a boiler above the sink and Leonard Rossiter letting himself in?

I'm fascinated by that link! I thought I knew Cardiff well after more years than I care to remember but I have never heard of the National History Museum; where is it - I must go and see it.

I thought the 'National History Museum' was the new name for Saint Fagans and that the Cathays Park building has reverted to being the 'National Museum' after a period as the 'National Museum and Gallery'. Mind you they seem to change the names of the various sites every couple of years - so God knows what's called what at the moment!

Student accommodation at Howard Gardens gets the go ahead -

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales ... 71-8821551

Thats 671 units. Student Castle, Summit House, Shand House and Northgate House have recently been completed. Work is underway on Windsor House and the student accommodation at Capital Quarter is imminent. Park Lane is already being advertised. Recent smaller student schemes have been completed on Senghenydd Rd and Cathays Terrace.

Thats a lot of new accommodation coming on stream. Are student numbers increasing significantly or are we seeing a shift away from traditional student living? Some of the prices that are being charged in Student Castle are eye watering and over the course of a year significantly more than a mortgage for a modest flat somewhere central.

Good to see the local councillors support the application. I may be wrong but I reckon this is aimed at the wealthier international student and with them they bring wealth and spending power which can only be good for Adamsdown, which is fast becoming the new cathays

I think it looks very good, but then the one on Bute Terrace probably looked good on paper too.

Karl, I think student's are less prepared to put-up with shoddy accomodation than maybe they were 20+ years ago. Also there's a growth in the number of wealthy non-EU students (ever seen the Qatari Ford Mustang in the City Rd area that apparently belongs to a student) who don't want the hassle of private landlords and also wouldn't be prepared to put up with some of the iffy student digs.

Personally I welcome it because Cathays is a ghost town come June/July when the students leave (and is like a slum/shanty town just before they leave when their rubbish is dumped out in the street), it would be good to see some of these houses sold on to owner occupiers.
