I agree with much of the above but there is one void that needs filling.

I was shocked the other day when someone pointed out that with the sole exeption of the statue of Boudicca inside City Hall there isn't a single statue in Cardiff, or Wales for that matter, of a noteable woman. There is the odd generic female but nothing commemerating a particular woman.

The leftie-liberal in me thinks that having female role-models is important so I'd like to see a public competition to chose one or more women to be commemorated and a further competition to select works and sites.

It's not as if there aren't suitable candidates. Off the top of my head I can name Princess Gwenllian, Lady Rhondda, The Ladies of Llangollen, Mary Jones, Ann Griffiths and the Davies sisters. I'm sure there are others.

As a woman - yes to Ash, no to the further pisstakers. But I must speak up for the miner down the Bay - yes, it's pretty ugly, but he is massively beloved of groups of women who are often photographed snuggling up to him and feeling his unfeasibly large muscles (perhaps steroids are to answer for these and the trouser problem noted above?).

Yeah, not rising to it, thanks. I've haunted this message board long enough to know better. Now, back to art...

I don't actually mind these statues. Captain Scott is unique and it's good to have statues such as the miner and Nye Bevan to remind us of Cardiff's history, even if the design is slightly off.
What I think we need is more modern sculptures, such as the needle thing in front of the library. At first they are a bit jarring and I often question their designs, but after a while they become an integral part of the scenery. The Hayes looks fantastic with that sculpture placed there. I'm even beginning to like the lightning bolt by the Admiral building.
A nice big sculpture in the middle of Roald Dahl Plas would look good in my opinion, and may be the answer to our own Trafalgar Square. But that's just my opinion.

I agree with that. That one does work - maybe because of its simplicity and bulk. I'm not sure what it's meant to represent - something maritime, IIRC.

How about a statue of Edwina Hart in her giraffe coat right next to the first city tram stop?!
