Not a biggie but still...

Ryanair puts on extra flights from Cardiff to Tenerife. The extra flight to Tenerife South will depart on Thursdays to complement the existing Monday service and will go on sale in the next few days

We're seeing a lot of small steps in the right direction. They're not transformational but they do suggest a turn around since the WG bought the airport. I gather that we're going to get some more new service announcements next week.

What routes does CWL currently not have which it once did at it's peak in 2007 out of interest?

Cardiff Airport 'missing passenger targets'

Cardiff Airport is missing its own passenger and profit targets and lacks a long term plan for growth, according to a new report from a group of AMs.

The Public Accounts Committee found that, while the Welsh Government had a clear rationale for buying the airport given its decline under previous owners Abertis, there were weaknesses in the preparation of the Welsh Government’s business case for buying the airport.

Passenger numbers have risen under Welsh Government ownership, but the committee says the rise isn’t as high as first predicted, and that by the airport management’s own admission, numbers are currently a year behind target.

Cardiff Airport’s business plans are currently approved on a two-year basis. But the committee says Glasgow Prestwick, which is also in public hands, operates with much longer term plans.

It will be interesting to see if these 'rescue' flights continue after the Severn Tunnel reopens. I seem to remember Air Wales running a Swansea/ Cardiff / London City service for a time. It wasn't a success but then in those days you didn't have to morgatge your house and pimp out your mother in order to afford a rail ticket!

If getting to CWL isn't too difficult for you this is a good option and if the pricing remains the same it could do very well. A 'super saver' off peak return to Paddington is £74.70 these days. Robbing so and so's, and many trains are running 3/4 empty.

Don't forget the trains are there not only to serve Wales but also the whole "M4 Corridor". I've been on trains at nearly all times and days of the week and its rare for them to be that empty on the London-Reading section.

In real terms the cheapest tickets are now cheaper than before privatisation. Thats often super advance tickets. In contrast, unregulated on-the-day fares (whether peak or not peak) have gone up a fair bit. Thats what you call price discrimination. Offer cheaper tickets to those who can book ages in advance and don't want flexibility; more expensive ones for those who want last minute flexibility. Its one of the reasons why train usage has increased so much, especially long-distance. (Its not cos driving is more expensive - the real terms costs of that have fallen with more fuel efficeint and cheaper cars, and a long period of real-terms cuts in fuel duty).

I caught a train two weeks ago and the return fare was £220 standard class
What really annoyed me was the return at 18:45 was virtual empty with hundreds waiting on platform at PAD presumably for the first semi off peak to leave at 19:15 By the time it got to Bristol Parkway, there were only 3 or 4 in the quiet carriage.

What a complete waste of infrastructure and peoples time, they have obviously got the pricing structure wrong.
Privatised railway, without competition is barking mad.
