2016 Expectations

Where to start eh! Well Central Square will be shaping up - no more Marland house - yahoo!! (or is this a mature building that should be saved! - not!, although doubtless some folk that have never even noticed it will complain at its loss  ) BBC and Number 2 well under construction or maybe even topped out? New Bus building and other associated strucures - under construction. Herbert Street apartments under construction? The JR Smart John Street Development under construction? Proposal or maybe more for southside callaghan sq. Student accom at Capital Quarter nearing completion. Two Towers proposed by Watkin Jones - under construction or fizzled out?.. I'm sure off the top of my head I've missed a fair bit! oh yes Cap Qtr no3 well under construction, and something actually started in the dumballs road area - oh and god knows what at sports village but the new rink will be operational - and hopefully that tent gone and just a bad memory!! Also maybe a couple of gems from out of the blue that will be pleasant additions to what already is shaping up as a massive year.
Anyway plenty of the above is pretty much a certainty and some of it most of us just hope happens - one things for sure 2016 is gonna be pretty busy, perhaps the biggest year of development our fine city has ever seen?
Oh and finally I'm sure by the end of 2016 we'll have an even newer proposal for our metro! oh and the Cardiff Wales Map forum will have welcomed its 1000th member!! ;) (didn't I say that last year for 2015? and its now 146!  )

Should be quite a lot going on. Off the top of my head -

Adamsdown - Howard Gardens student accom should be well underway and topped out by Dec 2016, ATRIUM part 3 finished

Roath - student accom in City Rd (Glan Hafren) and Oxford Lane should be finished and potentially at least another two schemes underway

City Centre - two Watkin Jones towers u/c, student accom in Windsor Lane completed, BBC topped out, No 1 Central Square occupied, Marland House/NCP turned to dust, No 2 Central Square u/c, Dominions House nearly finished, conversion of Caradog House in St Andrews Road to student accom under way, Custom house conversion to student accom u/c, we may even see a start on the proposed offices/hotel at the Westgate St entrance to the Millenium Stadium

Cathays - CUBRIC open and the next phase of the Maindy Rd campus underway, student accom in Crwys Rd completed,

Butetown - Capital Quarter No 2 completed and occupied, car park finished, student accom underway, Herbert Street residential underway, housing at Atlantic Wharf commencing, residential at Roath Lock, maybe even a recommencement of Capital Waterside, residential at the Royal Hamadryad

ISV - ice rink complete, further residential

I wonder what suburban residential if any will be underway. The Ely Mill project puts out a press release every so often but doesn't seem to get going, St Edeyrns promised a lot but has delivered nothing, the chances of Waterhall commencing in 2016 are remote. There is some building going on in Lisvane but it's not significant in numbers.

I'm sure I've missed lots out and there are a lot of smaller schemes around. As a wish list I'd like to see Dumballs Rd start in earnest, a new arena/convention centre commence construction on the south side of CS, the Coal Exchange acquire a benefactor, and Cardiff Uni take the plunge and completely remodel the Students Union.

No news on CardiffWalesMap Towers then, Paul? ;)

I think we can assume that at least one of the Watkin Jones towers will get built. There's already loads of activity on the Hope Street site, so fingers crossed.

Should be an interesting year! We might hear more about the transport interchange soon too.

CUBRIC will be finished by the end of the month, with staff moving in during February! Hopefully there will be a quick start on the next phase (which I think is the joint venture with IQE).

I'm pretty sure there was an open competition for people to submit redesign proposals for the SU. Guess we'll see some movement on this during 2016.

Looking forward to seeing how central square shapes up!

I can't find the thread but in Feb 2016, prospect place will eventually be complete. There is also a small development going on at the end of hunter street in the Bay which I imagine will be completed by the end of the year.

I hope they start the retail part, or at least there is moment on the retail part of the ISV, something to bring a center to this area and make it a destination as the whole area is a mix of reasonably interesting developments and buildings.
