Popular party venue Popworld is opening a venue in Cardiff city centre.

Bringing a colourful slice of '90s nostalgia to St Mary Street, Popworld will open where seventies bar, Flares used to be.

The venue has received an investment of £150k and will officially open its doors to the public on February 19 with Smirnoff’s fun-filled One Night Only event, featuring UV cannons, glowbots and fire eaters.

With locations across the UK, including Birmingham, Liverpool and Swansea, Popworld is the place where you can sing and dance along to the Spice Girls, S Club 7 and more '90s nostalgia without shame.

The refurbishment of the former Flares venue will see Popworld welcome colourful lights, a refreshed feel and funky booths and an exclusive area for VIPs will also be fitted.

Alan Armstrong, Head of Marketing for the Venues Division at Stonegate Pub Company, said: “Popworld is one of our most popular brands throughout the UK and this new venue is a welcome addition to our existing 16 clubs.

"The demand for this concept has increased massively recently and we’re excited to open and find out what the local residents make of it!”

I noticed a planning app for the old Flares unit! Isn't Popworld the thing they tried to get permission for where "Mary's" now is? And they couldn't get it because of concerns about the kind of drinks policy and clientele they'd get?

Good to see a venue brought back in to use. And inevitable that things would move on. Children of the 80s are the target audience for this venture, and we've become nostalgic more quickly than previous generations - perhaps hankering after a simpler, less threatening time! The 60s and 70s revival has had its day for now - that was a 90s and early-mid 00s things.

Sorry but 80s kids know nothing about real nostalgia. It's just a fashion statement - not like it was in my younger days. ;)
