Bowling alley hopes to strike it lucky in Cardiff

PostWed Oct 15, 2014 9:10 am

A bowling alley, Laser Quest centre and sports bar will be developed in Cardiff ready for a February opening next year.

Developer QLP Limited is investing £1.6m in the project after taking a 25-year lease agreement on 22,000 sq ft of the lower ground floor of the Stadium Plaza next to the Millennium Stadium.

The site, which will be known as Cardiff Superbowl, will provide Ten-Pin Bowling, VIP Lanes and Laser Quest centre with amusements, a diner and a sports bar to add to the 14-screen Vue multiplex cinema and hi-tech Pure Gym already located within the 160,000 sq ft entertainment hot spot.

Owners of Stadium Plaza, Mansford Real Estate, also expect soon to announce a high-profile anchor leisure tenant for the ground floor of the building.

Does this mean it's not going to be Bierkeller (part of the Burning Night Group) who submitted a planning application in June 2014?

I hate the Millenium Plaza or whatever it's calling itelf these days. I almost wish they couldn't find any tenants. The bloody thing might get demolished.

I'm with you Ash. Why build an iconic stadium and then put a grey box in front of it's main approach?

Bowling and Laser Quest hardly makes a Cardiff a first class city, reminds me of old coastal towns with the like, such as Barry Island or Torquay

I believe it was a necessary evil - they were hoping to keep the plaza empty, maybe with some artwork or pop up stalls on matchdays. But the Millennium Stadium came in over budget and they had to sell to land to cover costs...

Not certain if that's true, something I was told a few years ago

That sounds about right. If I recall there was supposed to be a hotel built (in the shape of a rugby ball....) in the gap between the county club and the post office on Westgate Street but nothing came of it. Also, whilst we are on about the Milstad, what ever happened to that gigantic curtain that could be drawn across the pitch to create a smaller space to host smaller concerts? Has it ever been used?

Using that criteria do we need to rule London out as being a first class city then ?

I remember going to the Trocadero in my early twenties and there was a small bowling alley in there and a tacky arcade or two.

It's a good addition to the leisure facilities in town, but I would have much preferred the planned All Star Lanes in The Capitol, which sadly never came to fruition. A better location and a very stylish operation.

I seem to remember that the reason given for The Empire Pool to be demolished was to make way for the gateway to the Mil Stad. Then the awful Mil Plaza was built which seemed a bit of a betrayal, especially considering how hideous it is!

Deep down I was kind of hoping it would eventually go as part of the Central Square redevelopment. I guess we're kind of stuck with it now, but at least the venues might get a bit more trade with all the new office workers over the next few years.
