Redevelopment of Arms Park

I didn't see this one coming, but it opens up the possibility of the north stand of the MS being completed as well, provision of another indoor-ish arena facility (as they are talking about it having a roof), plus the position of the pitch would be turned in such a way that land would be available on the Taff for redevelopment - possibly apartments or a hotel ?

It's at very early stages obviously but all parties concerned seem to at least be talking about it.

Having a vested interest in this (I live in Castle Court overlooking the ground) it is in need of modernisation.

I can remember the problems involving the WRU and the CRFC during the construction of the Millennium Stadium hence the remnants of the old National Stadium still being visible and Glanmor's Gap.
It's a nice thought to create a new facility but a roof is hardly required with their new expensive playing surface and although 15,000 is a nice round number the ground is rarely full to capacity.

Apartments are highly unlikely on any part deemed to be the Arms Park as I believe the covenant states the area must be used for sporting activities for the people of Cardiff. Maybe someone else can enlighten?

It probably can be gotten around if the apartments facilitate the development of additional sporting and recreation facilities.

Seriously ? If that's an April Fools joke it isn't a good one as it's a reasonable idea. The Cardiff Bay to Bristol tunnel yes, even the Cable Car proposal is less realistic than this and it was posted way before the 1st April.

Its very subtle for an April Fools. And follows on from earlier stories. Could be, but its not clearly ridiculous. (Then again their underwater bar for the bay didn't seem completely ridiculous to some either.)

The redevelopment of CAP, turning the pitch by 90degrees has been touted for a while now, so it may hold some grain of truth.

I heard this story locally a few weeks ago from friends pre April so possibly may be some truth in it. There is a restriction on the land in that it can only be used for sport/recreation but judging by the current building on the site since 1995 (stands,bars,training facilities gym car parking and hospitality boxes which look like mini apartments) it may be that any construction could be justified as long as it could be argued that there is a recreational/ sport connection. After all it could be argued that having a pint and watching rugby and any construction that enables you to do it fits the bill !

The covenants can probably be got around. The current stadium, along with the Glamorgan Cricket Ground in Sophia Gardens were partly financed in the 1970s by selling off the site of what was the Cardiff Central Hotel and is now the Holiday Inn. No doubt the same trick can be pulled again.
