I could definitely see a Jamaican/Caribbean restaurant being successful. I recently went to Dutchy's in Newport and despite its fairly poor location (we drove past it and missed it twice while looking for the place) it's very popular.

Mexican cuisine seems to be the current trend. A year ago we had barely anything catering for that. Now they seem to be popping up everywhere.

The corner by St John's church and that street could make a nice additional "cafe quarter" with a little outdoor seating. Not sure how well that goes with Caribbean or upmarket Chinese (although I agree both would be a welcome addition to the city).

Speaking of Caribbean, wasn't there meant to be a Turtle Bay opening on St Mary's street?

And speaking of Faux American dining.. we might have another such place opening up! The old Pure Rugby unit next to the Brewery Quarter on St Mary's street is subject to a change of use application to A3 to allow the opening of "Grilled", which will serve American inspired grills (steaks, chops, ribs, etc). May do better as I get the impression that actually having a more limited menu helps build a stronger brand. I think Applejacks tried doing a bit of everything vaguely American and hence didn't have a USP (it was up against say TGIs, yet lacked the name recognition).

Meanwhile a new operator is taking on the jinxed pub unit in the Old Library

A new pub and restaurant serving wood-fired pizzas and “adventurous” burgers is set to open in Cardiff city centre in September,

Locke & Remedy, owned by Revere Pub Company, will open on the former site of the Old Library – later Bar 1876 – in what is the company’s first venture in Wales and its fourth UK branch in total.

I'm not sure why so many operators have failed in what should be a very good location. Good luck to the new people although I'm mystified as to what "adventurous burgers" are!

A restaurant would be better than a bar at the Old Library but I'd like to see the building put to better use.

Are there any decent Chinese places? I'd love to hear some recommendations. The couple I've tried so far in Cardiff were just greasy, canteen-type food. It's about the only cuisine I miss here.

The Happy Gathering in Canton, the Riverside in Tudor Street and the Bozan in Albany Road are where the local Chinese community tend to eat - normally a good test. I've not tried the one in Churcill Way - it seems to be mainly aimed at Chinese students studying here.

.cn on city road is a great Chinese restaurant and the one on churchill way is very authentic Chinese as well and not greasy.
