Llanishen tax offices to close

So where do we think they're heading? My bet is that huge office block planned for above the new bus station

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs is shutting more than a hundred offices to be replaced by new regional centres, with up to 3,800 employed in Cardiff.

Offices in Wrexham, Swansea, Porthmadog and the present Cardiff base at Llanishen will close. An office in Merthyr is already due to shut in 2016.

On BBC Wales news it was reported that Llanishen will most likely close in 2019 which is only 3 and a bit years away. This means that HMRC will need to secure a new building ASAP and start marketing the current site. Closely followed by a planning app for homes I expect. I wouldn't be surprised if there's already a developer waiting in the wings.

If thats the case you can rule out the city centre. Gleider House which is one of the smaller blocks next to HMRC in Llanishen are advertising space at £8/9 per square foot. Where in Cardiff can you get offices cheaper than that? Perhaps I'm missing something but I thought the whole point of consolidation was to save money and not move to new city centre offices where even with incentives it's going to cost at least £18 per sq foot.

On a different note the land in Llanishen is likely to be sought after. HMRC occupy a very big site. I actually quite like the main building and I'd prefer to see it refurbed than demolished with the rest of the land utilised for fairly high density housing. In reality I fully expect the dead hand of Redrow/Bellway/Wimpey to 'regenerate' it into a windy collection of mock Georgian cul de sacs lined with diseased saplings.

My auntie told me that the new building is close to the new BBC Wales Broadcasting House. She seems to think that they won't be apart of the Central Square development, but in an older building close by. But this is official information... Staff have also been promised "good public transport links" - I wonder if they could be looking at Capitol Tower? Isn't that pretty empty now Admiral have moved out?

One option will be Callaghan Square, in the plot that was earmarked for Deloitte.

HMRC will be riddled with asbestos but if you can build on an old atomic weapons facility this won't present a massive problem!

Great for Cardiff, crap for Wales. Still looking at an increase from 3500 to 3800 so shouldn't be sniffed at. I just hope that this isn't the government body reportedly thinking of relocating to Central Square and that the MoJ will bring a few thousand more professional jobs to the capital.

South Gate House has 33,500 sq ft available, not sure this would be enough space but it's very close to Central Square and transport links.

The Capital Tower has only 36,000 sq ft free, so that's nowhere near big enough either.
