WATES TO BUILD 1,500 HOMES IN CARDIFF

PostTue Jan 26, 2016 10:14 am

Wates Living Space will build 1,500 homes in Cardiff as part of a £33m project after signing an agreement with the council.

The scheme is aimed at tackling growing demand for affordable housing in the city and will comprise about 600 council homes as well as properties for sale on the open market.

The homes will be built over ten years and forms part of part of Cardiff City Council's £33m Housing Partnership Programme. Wates Living Space was appointed to the project two months ago.

The company has previously completed work for the council including external enveloping to high-rise properties through the authority's Housing Maintenance Framework.

Susan Elsmore, the council's cabinet member for health, housing and wellbeing, said: "One of the key objectives of the City of Cardiff Council's Housing Partnership Programme is to invest in the regeneration of our communities and deliver real community benefits, including the creation of long-term, sustainable local training and employment opportunities.

"We will be investing up to £33m in this scheme, and are really looking forward to working with Wates Living Space on such an exciting project that will play a crucial role in tackling the city's housing need."

Andrew Davies, chief executive of the Wates Group, said: "City of Cardiff Council's Housing Partnership Programme is an exemplar model of how the urgent housing shortage can be efficiently addressed.

"Not only is this programme going to be an exercise in building new homes, but it also comes with a huge emphasis on creating lasting benefit for the local community and it is this combination that places Wates Living Space as the most suited partner to enable its delivery."

This is the scheme to build houses on council-owned land. Shame there isn't any further news on where the first batches of houses will be built, the phasing (is it front loaded, for instance), etc.
