Ironically, given this conversation, the sign for the previous occupiers of the Church Street unit most latterly occupied by Bet Fred has been revealed. It was the China Garden, serving the finest Cantonese cuisine. I have a vague memory of going in there after a session, probably emboldened by the beer to go a culinary journey of discovery rather than trotting off to Caroline Street for my usual rissole and chips.
If Apple Jacks does shut then Church Street will take on a 'broken Britain' vibe. I don't think it will last for long though, the location is too good. The red brick building on the north side needs to be sorted out first and it's current unoccupied state is bringing the rest of the street down.
